About the Gallery:

Melt Studio and Gallery is located just outside Picton in an old barrack of the former Camp Picton, which was built in 1940 as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) now called BASE31.

Melt Studio is the working studio of Canadian encaustic artist Susan Wallis. The Gallery showcases the work of Susan Wallis in addition to a selection of work from emerging and mid-career Canadian artists and artisans from all disciplines.

Our mandate is to foster and enhance public awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the positive cultural significance of the visual arts by profiling all levels of visual artists and artisans through the exhibition of their works in a supportive environment.

We include a project gallery room that is available for a reasonable monthly rental fee within the Gallery space.

Monthly experience workshops titled “Pause” will be hosted twice per month with a maximum of 6 persons per session. These workshop experiences will only be offered when it is safe to do so.

Position OVERVIEW:

As the Studio and Gallery Assistant, you will assist the Artist and Gallery Owner with the daily operating duties of the Studio and Gallery space.

JOB TASKS:

  • Greeting and monitoring of visitors to the gallery space.

  • Answer all questions on all art on display.

  • Completing sales of artwork. Packaging of said work for pick up by the client or arranging for the shipment of work.

  • Assisting in the curating of art shows including the hanging of work in the gallery.

  • Assisting in the promoting shows and experience workshops via social media platforms, local media, local art groups in addition to the gallery’s email list. (Instagram, Facebook.)

  • Maintaining inventory through online inventory program; Artwork Archive.

  • Follow health and safety policies for and procedures COVID 19 as mandated by the provincial government.

  • Liaison with other art galleries that represent the artist.

  • Assist in the promotion of the onsite experience classes and assisting the Artist (Gallery Owner) with the class instruction.

  • Liaise with visiting artists.

  • Assist in the organizing and maintenance of supplies in the working studio space.

  • Ordering depleted items and assisting with the preparation of boards for painting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • A love and interest in art.

  • Art education an asset, although not mandatory

  • Good communication skills

  • Sales Experience

  • Experience with dealing with the public in client service

  • Organized

  • Enjoys learning new things

  • Good at taking instruction

  • Good at working independently

  • Good computer skills and a fast learner of new computer programs

  • Enjoying working as part of a team

  • Good Social Media Skills

  • Punctual

  • Familiar with these programs is not mandatory, but an asset. (Artwork Archive, Quickbooks, Matterport, Mailchimp, Photoshop, LightRoom, Meta Business, Facebook, Instagram, Square, Squarespace.)

  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and access to a car.

  • Ability to lift up to a minimum of 40lbs

  • May need to qualify for Canada Summer Jobs Program (30 years old and under) only applicable if we are awarded funding.

  • Applicants over 30 are also encouraged to apply.

  • Have their own MAC laptop & Iphone

  • Can provide 3 character / work references

HOURS OF WORK

  • Maximum 20-30 hours per week.

  • Flexible start date in Spring 2024.

  • The gallery is open to the public from Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 5 pm. Closed Monday to Wednesday or by appointment only. Open Holiday Mondays. Hours may extend beyond 5 pm for gallery receptions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Associate will frequently be required to work independently, and occasionally from home.

  • Melt Studio and Gallery’s site does not have running water. Potable water for drinking and washing and outdoor toilets will be provided.

  • Melt Studio and Gallery is not yet barrier-free. There are two steps at the building entrance.

  • Space will be provided on-site for breaks and lunches.

  • Extensive training will be provided
