Lani Weingarten- To Celebrate the Rose, We Must Tolerate the Thorns
40 × 6 inches
Mixed media on acrylic plastic
When looking at Deb's glass assemblage Gemini, I was immediately drawn to the colour scheme and the similar qualities that both glass and acrylic panel possess. Both acrylic and glass can be translucent and/or transparent. Light bounces and reflects off of both materials. I thought it would be interesting to keep a monochromatic colour scheme (all pink on the bottom, all blue on top) similar to the Gemini. I started this piece painting the background blue and pink then added white on top. In certain light you can see the pink and blue from the first layer peaking through, which gives the idea of translucency.
Humming birds are hidden throughout my piece embracing the bird bath/bird feeder concept. Bird baths/feeders are often placed in gardens and "To Celebrate the Rose You Must Tolerate the Thorns" provides the perfect garden setting for any birdbath. It was so much fun to find ways that my art and Deb's were similar. Seeing her work inspired me to try new techniques and to contemplate the similar qualities of glass and plexiglass.
