Liane Kelly
Ceramic Artist
Liane creates from her workshop in Prince Edward County. As a ceramic artist with a geophysics background, she identifies with the raw minerals in the clay and glazes - transformed through firing to create permanence.
She has worked in studios in Chile and Canada. Originally making functional pieces, she now creates whimsical objects that combine hand building, throwing, carving and prose.
Liane has had the fortune to live and work throughout Latin America, and parts of Africa, Asia and Australia. She is happiest in wild environments. Her work is influenced by nature and the many places she has encountered.
‘Wild environments strongly influence my objects. I am eager to reveal the rawness of clay in my designs. The textures and carvings complete the image that I held while creating the piece – volcanic remains in Iceland, sea urchins in Chile, a camouflaged zebra in the grasslands of Tanzania.
Colours in my handmade glazes reflect the minerals that they are made from – iron, copper, manganese, silica. The ivory of an elephant’s tusk, the green of Japanese seaweed both come from personal encounters. Ultimately, I strive for an organic result that is soothing and understated.’ - Liane Kelly
