Wooden Movements
Solo Show - Ed Lehming
Show extended to December 28th
Artist Bio:
Ed Lehming is a self-taught fine art photographer based in Picton, Ontario .Ed has deep connections to North-East York Region, where he lived for many years, Bancroft and Prince Edward County. His photography is rooted in nature and landscape themes, often exploring the emotional resonance and texture of the natural world. Edβs work is significantly characterized by a painterly, impressionistic approach, all done in camera using Intentional Camera Movement (ICM). This technique transforms traditional landscape photography into abstract visual narratives that emphasize light, texture, and mood. His goal is not just to document a scene, but to evoke the feeling of being present in that moment. He also captures traditional landscapes and often enhances these images further by printing on large, brushed aluminum panels to add further depth and energy to the image.
πΏ Connection to Nature
He spends much of his time hiking through minimally disturbed environments, seeking out places where human impact is minimal. This connection to the land is central to his work, allowing him to capture intimate and often overlooked details of the natural world.
π· Philosophy of Photography
Ed describes photography as the art of βseeing deliberately.β He believes in finding beauty in the ordinary and encourages viewers to slow down and appreciate the subtle nuances of their surroundings. His work invites contemplation and emotional engagement.
πΌοΈ Presentation and Community
He has, till recently, been affiliated with A Place for the Arts, an art co-op in Bancroft, Ontario, where he exhibited his work and connected with other artists. For the past 8 years he was an active member in the Stouffville Studio Tour until his move to the County.
His images have been used in numerous publications, web-sites, and brochures, and are displayed both on-line and through his extensive photo-blog.
Artist Statement:
Photography is more than just capturing images; it's about conveying emotion and energy. Forests, with their intricate textures and subtle colors, can be challenging to photograph. Traditional techniques often result in flat, lifeless images. Through experimentation, I discovered that intentional camera movement (ICM) and using the correct medium, in this case, brushed aluminum, brings life to forest photography. By moving the camera during exposure, Iβm able to create dynamic images that reflect the forest's vitality. Techniques like slow shutter speeds, controlled movement, and intentional composition help capture the energy of the woods. This approach transforms static scenes into vibrant, expressive photographs, inviting viewers to experience the forest's spirit in a new way. Photography is a journey of discovery, and this process has enabled me to infuse my forest images with life and energy. - Ed Lehming
