Jennifer Anne Kelly

Glass artist

Jennifer Anne Kelly creates in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In 1992 Jennifer received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and attended her first glass course; the combination set her on a journey of discovering how to transform thoughts into glass. She has enjoyed the benefit of attending some of North America’s top glass schools including The Studio at Corning, Pittsburgh Glass School, Bullseye Glass Studio in Portland, and Urban Glass in New York. Jennifer’s focus is on combining the mystical with science and creating work that inspires people to feel optimistic. From fine detailed features to paired down abstractions, the effect is ethereal and serene. Recent experience with the long-term symptoms of Lyme disease has inspired Jennifer to look more closely at the interconnectedness of our environment and the effects of human interaction with nature. Ironically, her focus on forest floor macro landscapes came before her Lyme disease diagnosis. Jennifer works primarily in kiln formed glass with detail work in powdered glass and flame worked elements. An interest in social commentary has inspired large scale public art installations that juxtapose her finely detailed interpretations of nature intended for intimate interactions. Her work has been featured internationally in Cirque du Soleil boutiques and in public and private collections.

There is a believable saying that in Canada spring is about two weeks long. We have a long winter and then quickly move to summer. But the short spring is so cherished as we hunt for fiddle heads, finally breath in the smell of dirt, and watch for the movement of beings who were hidden away for months. There is a lot of metaphor for this special time. A lot we humans can take solace in and learn from.
This glass sculpture is created using a variety of techniques ranging from torch work to kiln work. The custom glass case is trimmed with copper.
