Vanessa Rieger

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST

Born and raised downtown Toronto, Vanessa Rieger graduated from OCADU in 2009 with a degree in Drawing and Painting. Combining her skills in fine art, wood working, set design, analog video and performance, this helped her develop a multidisciplinary art practice that gives her audience an immersed A/V experience. Some of her creative inspirations include haunted houses, sci-fi movies, practical special effects, VHS and cyber punk.

Rieger currently lives and works between Toronto and Picton Ontario, where she has a woodshop and studio space.

When not in her studio working on her own projects, Vanesssa is in high demand as an Art Handler and Installer at many galleries in Toronto like Inter Access, the Power Plant and Tangles Arts to name a few. To learn more about her diverse backgrouind visit vanessarieger.com

You can also see more of her work outside this gallery right now!  Base31 commissioned her to create a large installation on the theme of “Natures Aviators”.  It’s on the wall next to the Aviators Garden.

One of my favourite birds located up at Base31 is the Barn Swallow, also known as Hirundo Rustica. As a studio resident of Base31, I feel lucky that the Barn Swallows have chosen this area to call home. Their beautiful songs and distinct conversation-like chatter fills the air, and their flying patterns and aerobatics are a joy to watch. Much like the planes that use the nearby runways to train pilots, the Swallows of Base31 use the area to train their young and teach them the art of flight.
