Alan Ray- The Watchers in the Woods
14 x 14 inches
Oil on wood tondo in a floater frame
My "twin" for the 2025 Pairings Show is artist Heather Munro, whose inspiration piece is "Mossy Woods", a delicate paper sculpture housed inside a tin can. In Heather's woods, the foreground is dominated by a large tree stump. An old mossy stump just like it rests on the side of the road near my cottage in Haliburton. It's a familiar landmark. It's most visible in early spring when the leaves are just emerging and wild leeks are sprouting up from the dark soil. There is little foliage to hide nesting birds and roaming wildlife. The same is true for the people who come out to observe them. A sense of whimsy flows through my mossy woods as those who are watched watch the watchers.
