Acrylic painting on oval canvas
18 x 26 inches
Belonging to the Haudenosaunee, this dance is a representation of friendship, peace, Thanksgiving and gratitude to one another as human beings and our extended family; All of creation. It expresses the duality of all things from the twin sons; night and day, sun and Moon, dark and light, beautiful and strange, and more. The dance begins with clues from the singers to harmonize the step and then begin to move in a counter-clockwise motion. This rhythm is kept through to the end of the verse, and the beginning of the next signals to change direction. This demonstrates balance, reciprocity; giving and receiving.
Round dance is a song and dance used in a social context to foster unity and friendship. This painting was inspired by actual events.
